Scouts Centenary, Dragon Boating, Dorney Lake

Friday 3rd August 2007 - Day 2

Dragon Boat Events Ltd. is renowned as a company that both supports and provides a safe environment for the disabled and here we see Liam from the Parkgate Scouts group with his mother. Despite Liam suffering from autism, he was determined to join the rest of his troupe out in the dragons!

Far out in the lake we see the other ten boats as they practiced their turns, stopping, starting and bracing the boat. The instructors also brought extra fun into the sessions with dragon boat games like tug-of-war.

In tug-of-war, the front half of the boat turns round and faces the back half. The boat then needs to by positioned beside a buoy with the buoy floating by the middle of the boat. On the command GO!, both teams paddle as hard as they can and the winners are the team who eventually manage to push the boat so the buoy ends up at their end.

In addition to dragon boat games, a few boats also had their own impromptu races to give their teams an experience of what racing was like and how important teamwork and timing is in paddling the dragons during a race.

Where safety and the opportunity arose, there were also a few scouts who had a go at helming the dragon boats ... under the watchful eye of their instructor of course!
