Scouts Centenary, Dragon Boating, Dorney Lake

Thursday 2nd August 2007 - Day 1

The day started with the event team setting up the day. Before too long, the dragons were all made up and sat challenging each other from across the pontoon.

With just the PA system to set up and the paddles and buoyancy aids to organise, it was soon time for the scouts to arrive.

Before long, busses full of excited scouts pulled up by the Dragon Boat Events control marquee and then the day really began!

Each scout group was organised into teams of seventeen, with each team being paired up with an instructor.

A full safety brief covering all the various paddle strokes and commands was covered, as well as bracing the boat (to stop the boat capsizing) and what to do in the unlikely event the boat did capsize.

Once the instructor was satisfied that everyone knew what to do, there was a final check of all the buoyancy aids and off to the dragons.

For the next ninety minutes, the scouts put into practice what they had learnt, engaged in some games with other boats, practiced race paddling before lining up for the first of their two races.

The day finished in dramatic style with the eleven fastest teams lining up for a history making eleven boat final - the largest ever done in the UK.
